Definition
Form 1 - Determine if the person with brain injury was arrested prior to his/her injury. If so, the number of arrests and whether the arrests were alcohol and/or drug related.
(1) Prior to your injury, were you ever arrested?
(2) If yes to #1, how many times?
(3) If yes to #1, how many were drug/alcohol related?
Form 2 - Determine if the person with brain injury has been arrested during the past year. If so, the number of arrests and whether the arrests were alcohol and/or drug related according to the person with brain injury at the time of their follow-up evaluation.

(3) If yes to #1, how many were drug/alcohol related?

Details
Data collectors should list all the charges and denote the number that are alcohol or drug related (e.g., DUI) and the number that are not. A person under the influence at the time of the arrest is not considered an alcohol/drug-related arrest unless the charge was alcohol/drug related.
If person is arrested post-injury for a crime allegedly committed pre-injury, record the arrest as occuring pre-injury. (For “Arrests” archived 4/1/2022)
Characteristics
Some cases older than 1/1/97 have data for this variable because centers were encouraged to collect data retrospectively for older cases.
In 2003, two NIDILRR Model Systems had difficulty obtaining this information (10% or more missing data). These two centers also had difficulty collecting drug, alcohol and special education variables.
